Through a series of lectures, exercises, home assignments and seminars, the course will teach and discuss theories of the Earth's evolution, the Earth's large-scale physical structure and geodynamic processes from surface to core, as well as theories and applications of relevant geophysical methods. This course includes: Formation and evolution of Earth. Plate tectonics. The Earth's magnetic field and palaeomagnetism. Dating methods and radiogenic isotopes. The composition of the Earth from the core to the lithosphere. The Earth's shape and gravity field, the geoid, isostasy. Seismology and Earth's structure. Seismicity, source mechanisms, stress field. Heat flow in continents and oceans. Convection in the Earth's mantle and core.
