East European countries pioneered a number of unconventional media practices that have been transplanted to the West or influenced it in a variety of ways, from troll farms, and subversive uses of mobile communication in Ukrainian and Belarusian protests to memetic warfare during the Russo-Ukrainian war. This interdisciplinary course combines an introduction to major contemporary media theories with an analysis of novel media phenomena in the post-Soviet space. You will follow different paths taken by media systems in countries such as the Baltic states, Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, and others.
