We are all familiar with weather forecasts and you have probably read about climate simulations. These are both examples where partial differential equations are used as models. The same kind of models turns up in many other areas, such as financial mathematics or biotechnology to mention a few. The methods used to solve these kinds of problems are in focus in this course, i.e. numerical solutions to partial differential equations. When solving these problems numerically you usually get a large (often massive) equation system to solve. How to analyse and solve systems of equations is another main topic in the course.
