The course provides knowledge about the basics of data assimilations used in operational forecast models such as 3D-Var and 4D-Var. Furthermore, the basic theory of ensemble modelling and various methods for evaluating probability forecasts are studied. Additionally, we review how seasonal forecasts are produced and assess their current quality. The course can be taken in parallel with the course Numerical Modelling of the Atmosphere, 10 credits.
