This course explores sustainability and sustainable development in relation to products and technologies based on chemistry and materials science. It examines economic models and environmental, social, and economic factors influencing the transition to a sustainable society. Students analyse societal system effects of new materials and technologies, including potential goal conflicts. The course addresses materials recycling, circularity, resource use, and differences between social groups and regions. It also introduces life cycle analysis methodologies and discusses human and ecotoxicological effects of chemicals and materials.
