In this course, you will learn about classification of radioactive waste from various industries throughout the entire nuclear fuel cycle, with a particular focus on spent nuclear fuel. We will explore different methods of handling radioactive waste, including measurement techniques for characterizing various waste streams and older waste. The course covers the decommissioning of facilities, as well as relevant laws, regulations, and oversight processes. You will also gain an overview of different countries' decisions regarding the final disposal of radioactive waste. Special emphasis will be placed on the Swedish method for storing used nuclear fuel. Additionally, we will discuss ethical and sustainable aspects in relation to radioactive waste and compare it with other energy production methods using life cycle analyses.
