Completed courses of 120 credits including 60 credits in biology/medicine/pharmaceutical sciences and courses worth at least 15 credits in one of the following subjects: bioinformatics, biomedicine, biotechnology, evolution, genetics, genomics or systematics. Our understanding of human evolution and genetics has advanced enormously in the last two decades with the sequencing of the human genome. Based on genome variation from many individuals, we now have a better picture of human evolution and demographic history. In addition, ancient DNA studies on pre-historic humans have transformed our view of the human past. The course provides a comprehensive guide and overview of how genetics can be applied as a tool to investigate human history and evolution. It includes in-depth overviews of the human genome, population genetic tools to analyse the human genome, human evolutionary history, human genetic variation and the link to traits, ancient DNA on prehistoric humans, and a survey of other research areas focusing on the human past, such as archaeology, anthropology, palaeontology, and linguistics.
