Completed courses of 120 credits including (1) 60 credits in biology and 30 credits in chemistry or 30 credits in earth sciences, or (2) 90 credits in biology, in both cases including either of the advanced courses Ecology 15 credits or Limnology 15 credits, or (3) 90 credits in earth science including Dynamics of Earth Systems - Global Change 10 credits.Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.
This course deals with the central role of humans in the Earth's ecosystems. We will address how different types of ecosystems react to large-scale human disturbances, such as through changes in climate, land use or biogeochemical cycles, and how those changes in turn affect humans. You will learn how human disturbance can be quantified and about ecosystem resilience, planetary boundaries and social-ecological sustainability. Theory is blended with practical exercises such as role-playing, individual writing, a field course and computer exercises to help you acquire key skills for future work in the environmental sector.
